Ubtech Jimu Robots

The kids really like these robots! We currently have 2 of them – the BuzzBot / MuttBot one and the Builderbots Kit. Usually, each kit can build 2 different robots (one set of parts – two different sets of directions – so you can build one robot or the other at a time). They are a lot of fun to build – with a lot of similarities to the Lego Technic & Lego Mindstorm sets. The assembly directions are really great! By using the free app on a tablet or phone, it walks you through the building process step-by-step. You can even rotate the image on the tablet/phone in 3-D to see what it looks like from different angles to make sure you are on the right path.

But the fun doesn’t stop after building these robots – it has just begun! The app has different sections – which allow you interact and control the robot. You can control it like a remote controlled robot – or program it to operate autonomously. Our kids are just getting into the programming aspect. It is fun to watch them learn how to control the robot and make it do things – like pickup or push items in the house.

I think this is a great toy – because it combines using a tablet / phone, programming and having the robot interacting with our physical environment – as opposed to the kids just being engrossed in some virtual world or game on their device.

I’m sure, at some point, they will be deviating from the provided robot designs and make their own creations. So I can see this being a toy that interests the kids for a considerable period of time – because how they use it will change as they grow in sophistication and knowledge of robots, programming and building.

Sincerely,

Chip
